If you've been in a few modern kitchens, you've probably noticed a theme. Most modern kitchens have islands! Kitchen islands are not just a passing trend. They're an excellent innovation, and people include them in their kitchens for some very good reasons. In fact, if you're thinking about remodeling your kitchen, there are a few great reasons to include an island in the design.
1. You'll have extra work space.
Do you ever feel like you don't have enough counter space in your kitchen? Feeling short on counter space can make the space really difficult to cook in. And yet, counters get covered in food and supplies so quickly! Adding a kitchen island to your design adds more counter space to your kitchen plan. You'll have more room to slice and chop veggies, more space for small appliances like toasters, and more room for others to help you prep food.
2. People will have somewhere to sit.
Not everyone includes seating at their kitchen island, but many people do. It's a really good idea. So often, the kitchen becomes the part of the home where people congregate, but they end up standing around awkwardly because there is no place to sit. If you have your remodeling team include an island with a couple of seats, then your guests can sit and chat while you prepare dinner, or your kids can eat breakfast while you're cleaning and cooking.
3. You'll have more cabinets for storage.
Kitchen items seem like they multiply! One day you have two coffee pots, and the next, you have three coffee pots, two sets of matching mugs, and a French press! Many kitchens do not have enough cabinets, and the items end up accumulating on the counter or in storage spaces outside of the kitchen. If your remodeling team includes an island in your design, you'll have more cabinets to use for storage.
4. You'll have room for a second sink.
Having a second sink in the kitchen really comes in handy. It is so nice not to have to wash your hands over dirty dishes or wash your veggies in the same sink where you wash your hands. Having a kitchen island gives you a convenient place to put that second sink.
